2.  Graphics

Start another new Word file.

  • Insert pictures from a file.  We will test inserting a large file and a small one.  Turn on the ‘Details’ View so that you can see file sizes.

Notice the difference in file size for the two Vinca photos above.  The smaller one was saved as a ‘web-ready picture’ using Microsoft Picture It! Publishing.  It will load much more quickly on the web than the larger photo will.

First insert a small picture file into your web page.  Then insert a large picture file.  Notice how much more space the large file takes.

Delete the large picture file by clicking on it until little handles appear along the sides and corners, then press the delete key.

    • Insert clip art
    • Insert word art
    • Copy and resize graphics – Here are graphics you can copy.

Note: If you are having trouble placing your graphics where you want them, don’t worry about it right now.  We’ll show you how to control that later when we discuss tables.

Save this file with a different name than the first one, for example: mypage2.htm

At this point you should have the following files/programs on your computer:

3Hyperlinks

·         Working in your second web page in Word (eg. mypage2.htm in Word), create a hyperlink to a page on the web.

  • http://www.google.com/ is a link you can use

  • If you highlight the link name before selecting the hyperlink icon, selecting the icon will automatically create the link for you

  • Right click anywhere on the link and edit the hyperlink to see what the link looks like.  Notice that you can have the display text appear differently than the actual hyperlink.

  • Set the hyperlink so that it's page will open in a new window when selected.

  • Close the Hyperlink dialog box.

  • Hold down the Ctrl key and click on your link to see what happens.

 ·         Next create a link to your other page.

  • Insert the hyperlink

  • In the hyperlink window, select ‘Existing File or Web Page’ and 'Current Folder'

  •  Locate the file for mypage1.htm and select it.  If the directory path is included with the name, be sure to delete it

Note:  If you were to include the entire path, when the hyperlink is selected on the web, the hyperlink would look in the user’s computer drive to find the file.  That might work for you, but it would not work for anyone else.   If no path is given, the web page hyperlink will look in the current directory.  (Note: you could specify a subdirectory if desired, as long as you use the subdirectory structure when you load the pages to the web).

  • Hold down the Ctrl key and click on your link to see what happens.

 ·         Create an email link, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the link to see what happens.

 ·         Create a link to a location on this page

  Link to a heading:

  • Enter some text with headings.  Set the font style (far left selection on your Format tool bar) for the heading lines to one of the Heading settings.

  •  Near the top of your file, insert a hyperlink

  •  Select ‘Place in this Document’ on the left side of the window

  •  You should see your headings, as well as a selection for ‘Top of Document’

  • Select your heading and type the text to display for it.  Select ok

  • Test your link by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the hyperlink.

       Link to a bookmark:

  • First create a bookmark

  •  Put your cursor at the location that you want to link to

  • On the menu bar, select:  Insert > Bookmark

  • Type a name for your bookmark (no spaces)

  • Click on Add

  • Now create your hyperlink

  •  Put your cursor at the location where you want to place the link

  •  Insert a hyperlink

  • Select ‘Place in this Document

  • Select your bookmark and type the text to display for it.

  •  Select ok

  • Test your link holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the hyperlink.

  • Save your file and Exit Word

  • Open your Explorer window.  Click on your second file name – see your ‘Page’ open in a web browser.  Test all of your hyperlinks.  Do they act the way you expected them to?
